Factors and multiples (Notes)
Factors and multiples
Factors:-
Factors are the numbers we can multiply together to get another number.
A factor of a number divides that number exactly.
Example: find the factors of 12
pair 1: 1*12
pair 2: 2*6
pair 3: 3*4
(In all the four cases the remainder is 0 if we will divide them)
Here 1,2,3,4,6,12 all are factors of 12.
Remember-
1.Every number has 1 as a factor.
2.Every number is a factor of itself.
3.Every number (except 1) has at least two factors, 1 and the number itself.
4.The factors of a number is always equal to or less than the number.
Multiples:-
A multiple of a number is the product obtained when the given number is multiplied by the same or any other number.
Example,
Find the multiples of 12.
12*1=12
12*2=24
12*3=36
and so on.
This all products we got by multiplying with 12(12,24,36,48...) is called multiples of 12.
Remember-
1.A number is a multiple of itself.
2.Every number is a multiples of 1.
3.Every multiples of a given number is equal to or greater than the number itself.
4.Every number has infinite numbers of multiples.
5.0 is a multiple of every number. But 0 is not a factor of any number except 0.
